Matt Smith: Eleventh Doctor Who

UK actor Matt Smith, currently appearing in Party Animals, has been announced by the BBC as the next Doctor Who.

Smith, 26, will take up the role in 2010 following the exit of David Tennant.

The actor was confirmed in the role over the Christmas period and will begin filming for Series Five this summer, for transmission in 2010.

The announcement was made on Saturday in a Doctor Who: Confidential ep.

Smith has also appeared in The Ruby and the Smoke alongside Billie Piper and has an upcoming role in Moses Jones. He performed opposite Christian Slater in a stage production of Swimming With Sharks and played a lead role in the BAFTA winning BBC One series, The Street.

“I’m just so excited about the journey that is in front of me,” said Smith. “It’s a wonderful privilege and challenge that I hope I will thrive on. I feel proud and honoured to have been given this opportunity to join a team of people that has worked so tirelessly to make the show so thrilling.”

New Executive Producer, Steven Moffat said, “As soon as Matt walked through the door and blew us away with a bold and brand new take on the Time Lord, we knew we had our man. 2010 is a long time away but rest assured the Eleventh Doctor is coming - and the universe has never been so safe.”

David Tennant announced last October that he would be stepping down from the role at the end of this year, with the new doctor taking over in 2010.

This year, there will be four Doctor Who specials in the UK featuring Tennant. A BBC press release suggests that the last of David Tennant’s episodes as the Doctor will be broadcast in the New Year of 2010.

Prior to the announcement here were the odds from UK betting circles:
Patterson Joseph - 31/10
Chiwetel Ejiofor - 22/5
James Nesbitt - 37/5
David Morrisey - 20/1
Billie Piper - 21/1
Aidan Gillen, Sean Pertwee - 24/1
Jack Davenport - 25/1
Ben Wishaw, Rhys Ifans, Robert Carlyle - 29/1
Colin Salmon - 43/1
Russell Tovey - 47/1
Alan Davies, Jennifer Saunders - 49/1
Richard E Grant - 54/1
John Simm - 59/1
Catherine Tate - 64/1
Richard Coyle - 79/1
Paul McGann, Jason Statham, Rowan Atkinson, Daniel Radcliffe, Stephen Fry - 99/1

ABC will screen the 2008 Christmas special “The Next Doctor” at 7:30pm Sunday January 25 on ABC1 although the title refers to a fellow time traveller played by actor David Morrissey and not Matt Smith.

Press Release:
The BBC today announced that Matt Smith has been cast in the role of the Doctor in the iconic BBC series Doctor Who. Smith will be the eleventh Time Lord and will take over from David Tennant who leaves the show at the end of 2009. He will be seen in the forthcoming fifth series that will be broadcast in 2010.

The fifth series will also have a new lead writer and Executive Producer in the form of the BAFTA award winning writer Steven Moffat who is taking over from Russell T Davies. Moffat will be joined by Piers Wenger who will be the new Executive Producer for BBC Wales making the show.

Following David Tennant’s decision to step down at the end of 2009, the team behind the new series set about casting the new Doctor so that new adventures could be created and scripts written with Matt in mind.

The identity of the new Doctor was revealed on a special edition of Doctor Who Confidential that was broadcast on BBC One on January 3rd at 17.35hrs. In it Smith revealed his initial reaction at taking on such a legendary role and his thoughts on what direction the Doctor might now be going with him playing the part.

Matt Smith said of his new role “I’m just so excited about the journey that is in front of me. It’s a wonderful privilege and challenge that I hope I will thrive on. I feel proud and honoured to have been given this opportunity to join a team of people that has worked so tirelessly to make the show so thrilling.

“David Tennant has made the role his own, brilliantly with grace, talent and persistent dedication. I hope to learn from the standards set by him. The challenge for me is to do justice to the show’s illustrious past, my predecessors and most importantly to those who watch it. I really cannot wait.”

Lead writer and Executive Producer Steven Moffat said “The Doctor is a very special part, and it takes a very special actor to play him. You need to be old and young at the same time, a boffin and an action hero, a cheeky schoolboy and the wise old man of the universe. As soon as Matt walked through the door and blew us away with a bold and brand new take on the Time Lord, we knew we had our man. 2010 is a long time away but rest assured the Eleventh Doctor is coming - and the universe has never been so safe.”

Piers Wenger, Head Of Drama, BBC Wales added “With two hearts, a ferocious mind and over 900 years of experience behind him, it’s not every 26 year old actor who can take on a role like the Doctor but within moments of meeting Matt he showed the skill and imagination needed to create a Doctor all of his own.

It’s just the beginning of the journey for Matt but with Steven Moffat’s scripts and the expertise of the production team in Cardiff behind him, there is no one more perfect than him to be taking the TARDIS to exciting new futures when the series returns in 2010.”

Ben Stephenson, Controller BBC Drama added “I am delighted to see Matt take on this iconic role. It will see him continuing his relationship with the BBC following his performances in Ruby In The Smoke and Party Animals, and his upcoming role in Moses Jones. The combination of Matt, Steven and Piers will, I know, take Doctor Who onto new and even dizzier heights.”

Jay Hunt, Controller. BBC ONE said “Matt Smith will be a mesmerising eleventh Time Lord, true to the spirit of the show. He is a worthy successor to David Tennant who has been utterly remarkable in the role and promises to continue to be in next year’s four special episodes.”

Hi christmas was a nice with the family. Took our dog,Rocky and our Kitten, Samantha to Bridgetown, both of them behavior very well. In Rocky case his behavior  has been a struggled, a rescue dog he had behavior was attacking other dogs, he was never socialized with  other dogs by the previous owners, in fact, there were few things that had left out about Rocky.
His behavior was bad when he jumped the fence and an attack other dog few months back, the dog was fine, we pay the for the vet bill, this is one of the reasons that we so much money has been spend on him, and we had lack of money, one of the reason of not going to  some of the smaller cons lot Wastelands.

We got home on monday afternoon all of us were tried, Heather slept awhile I unpacked the car, After I unpacked the car  I got dog & Kitten dinner, then I fell asleep, so did the animals I found Sam lying on my chest asleep and Rocky asleep  on the floor next to me.

Tuesday- We went to bunbury in the afternoon saw the Bond film, I like it, still lots of unanswered questions.  Hatred the open titles and the song was crap.

Wed: OH **** what has Rocky done, I let him outside for pee have play with him, all the dogs in the around started barking mad,Rocky with some speed jumped the fence and attacked another dog walking with their owners, I scrambled as much I could to stopped him, I grab him, tried pushed him down, Rocky twisted his collar off, and attack again, the woman picked her dog and Rocky grab poor dog leg and I pulled him ,  lied, him down awhile their left the dog, looked like guy was hurt too.  This time, I felt huge blow to me and Heather, I yelled at Rocky he was F***ing dead. We reported the matter to the police and the ranger.

Thursday-When of my saddest days, we had placed Rocky down. Tjat early morning I dung his grave. We took Rocky to vets at 11:00 along with the vet was the ranger, he told us the other dog was in surgery , and the owners were willing to drop the case we agree, to pay for the operation, of course we said yes. I held Rocky in my arms as the vet put him down, we both cried so loudly as he died. We took him home and buried him out in back yard. I hope everyone had a better start to 2009

Well we have two pets now, our dog rocky-which is a handful at many times. Now we have a kitten, Samantha. She very playful. At first we were uneasy about Rocky, his first meeting with Sam he made lots of clicking noises, I grew up with dogs and cats at the same time, but I have never heard this sound at all.
He licked her, tried pull out of my arms, so gently hit he on the nose. Each time Same waked up runs and plays, Rocky just chased her, again this was not on, so we placed him outside.
By the third & fourth days, he seems ok with Sam, all he wanted to do was to licked her, and he trying to roll her over on her back, so she get the message he was on top. However, Same saw this as play, gave rocky with her young claws a hit in the mouth , and he just stood back. Still we have make sure he does not chase her.

Well that my news. I return to work on Monday, work up to xmas eve. I'm sorry that we will not be a Swancon BBQ, other things are happening. Next year at the Sherlock Holmes Society, I wll be awarded a life member, I did not know I been there for so long.

I'm doing a talk on the history of animation to group of seniors, which calls themselves University of the 3rd Age on Friday.  This is the second time that has happen to me, few years ago ABC in South Australia phone to tak about 1960;s Batman Series, which went down well.

I shall report back later tell all how it went.

What sad news about the Astor, I really enjoying to pictures there.
The first time I went to the astor  in the late 70's showing classic films, such as 1933 King Kong,
Tod Browning 's The Freaks, James Whale's Frankenstein and others.
Went to school outing to see,  History class went to see ,fiddler on the Roof .
I always remember passing the old cinema when it was turn into a bingo Hall and showing  porn, that when a cinema had
reached rock bottom.
But it came back, which was great to see- with the ArtDeco.
Now its going closing again.
How sad.

18 July 2008 @ 03:08 pm
Its cold, wet down in Collie, my last day of leave, go back to work on Monday. Already for new batch of students at ECU on Tuesday.
I was going to be writting more in my journal, things you have planned nothing work out. I did all those household stuff, cleaning, some work in the backyard, the rains stop that. I did few things with my two weeks, going to the films or catching up stuff on dvd.

I saw Get Smart, my thoughts that the filmmakers did a very good job on it, I laugh at the places that others in the cinema
did not. I like the opening shot with old stuff from the TV series, the car, the phone, the cone of silence, even the suit.
As a film based on tv show, that has did been on TV here for awhile, it kept what the show was about, unlike others;
'Wild Wild West', 'I Spy', 'The Avengers', Mod Squad' and Bewitched and few others.

I did catch up with Clint Eastwood two war films; Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima.
I felt that Eastwood told the story of the battle of both side very well, felt for these guys on both sides
and terrible stuff that the soldiers on both side did, both films are well worth looking at.
The war scenes are graphic, but its the human emotions that make you feel sad about it all,
how some soldiers were left betrayed by their government.

Also I watched some of my musicals on DVD, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, West Side Story, Wizard of Oz, I few more  to watch,
like singin'in the Rain, Rocky Horror, The Music Man, just name a few.

I'm just waiting for friend of mine to give me last 4 eps of new series of Doctor Who, of course I watching the series on ABC
Watching it again, I'm starting to get the clues.

I caught up with old episodes of The Bill, interesting how the programme has changed.
I starting working on my two short stories; I guess when finished they will put aside and filed away, like the others.
That all from me

work

Last day at work before I go on leave for two week. This time, I'm going be better in writting up stuff for the journal.
Had busy day yesterday, in a space of ten minutes of each other I had set up two laptops/projectors in two different rooms for staff, and then set up a video conference for the dean, so he could talk to someone at Joo.

Its cold down in bunbury, even colder in Collie. I need a action plan for the two weeks-
Need to get up at good time to start my day, 7:00-7:30, good breakfast. depends on the weather,
clean up the back yard for few days, then clean different rooms of the house.
I began last weekend to cleaning and changing stuff around in the computer room/my study- so that I can start working some writing, I have to finished off the article on Peter Cushing for the Sherlock Holmes journal, I need
to start to write a short history of West Lodge for the 25th year, need to put in order my stuff that I have done at Swancon, one day I like see what I had writting up as panels published, as I get older, my memories might fade.
And ideas of short stories, which of course noone will read- maybe one day.

Also take time off to walk dog, or the dog to walk Damian.

I need to catch up few new DVD  that have been brought,  like Flags of our fathers, the Hidden Fortress
Good night and good luck and few more that had forgotten.

I shall write soon.

12 June 2008 @ 12:23 pm
I'm slowly catching up with the new series, this morning before I left work I watch silence in the library, very good.  It just hold my breathe.
Tomorrow I see part two, just wait for the last lot to see. the ABC will start broadcast of the new series on sunday 29th of June at 7:30.
I think so far season 4 is shaping up little bit better than season 3.
I brought Time Meddler on DVD, the extras are good. It looks at 1st doctor in comics.
